013: ChatGPT Prompting (10 Prompts For Designers)

Welcome to this week’s edition of Architecture Insights.

Understanding correct prompting and what to ask ChatGPT is crucial for getting the results you want, let’s look at a few prompts for architects and designers to get the most out of ChatGPT.

This Past Week in AI

Midjourney releases Alpha.

Summary: This is the web version of Midjourney, at the moment it is only available to “power users” if you’ve generated more than 10,000 images. It may be another few weeks until we see it available for all users.

ChatGPT Prompts

To fully utilize ChatGPT for architectural projects, you can use a simple and effective prompt structure:

Establishing the Context: Initiate by introducing or providing context for your inquiry or instruction. This will help ChatGPT understand the topic and provide relevant insights.

Crafting Precise Queries: When asking questions, be concise and specific to receive a focused response from AI. Clarity is key.

Introducing Constraints or Specifics: If necessary, add supplementary details or constraints to guide ChatGPT's responses. This allows for project-specific variables to be considered, resulting in more tailored and contextually relevant suggestions.

Sample ChatGPT Prompts:

“I'm an architectural designer and I want to write an email to new potential clients who inquire about my services. I want this to be friendly but also encourage them to book a kick-off consultation meeting with me.”

“Could you provide an 18-month project schedule that will follow the following deadlines: 4 weeks - concept design/development, 4 weeks - 50% construction set submission, 2 weeks - 75%-90% construction set submission, 2 weeks - Tender submission, 6 weeks - construction.”

“Can you give me a list of 50 questions to ask community members during the community involvement stage in the design of a new community town center. The land is currently occupied by a large portion of settlers who have voiced concerns in the past about improper use of the land.”

“Your client wishes to incorporate Vastu Shastra principles into their new home design. How do you integrate these principles while ensuring that the home is both aesthetically pleasing and functional?”

“As a landscape architect, if tasked with incorporating sustainable elements into the design of a housing complex, particularly focusing on green roofs, rain gardens, and other environmentally friendly features, how would you approach this integration?”

"A city is planning to construct a new city hall. The emphasis is on creating a design that is welcoming and accessible to all members of the community. How would you approach the design to achieve both a functional space for government officials and an inviting environment for the community.”

“As a designer, if presented with the challenge of designing a garden that is friendly to wildlife, how would you plan and create the space to attract and support local species?”

“A client working within budget constraints seeks to transform an old warehouse into a collection of affordable residential lofts. How would you optimize both space utilization and aesthetics, all while minimizing overall costs?”

“An art institution has approached you, seeking your expertise as an architect to design an expansion specifically intended for storing high-end artwork. In this context, what are some contemporary design practices or strategies that prioritize security?”

“I am a landscape architect who is tasked with re-designing an existing 10-acre community centre in southern Florida. Could you provide a list of nearby precedent projects that fit the same climate and overall size?”
