Welcome to this week’s edition of Architecture Insights. A weekly newsletter on artificial intelligence for architects, landscape architects, and designers.

GPT-4 Turbo release, a $700 AI pin, Adobes $4.99/month AI assistant, and a simple, fun-to-use brush-to-image tool. Lots happened in AI this week for AEC professionals, we cover it below.

This week in AI

1. GPT-4 Turbo, the best GPT model is now the standard version for those with a Plus subscription. The free version still runs on GPT 3.5-turbo.

2. The AI pin is the newest evolution in the AI world. It is a small (roughly airpod case-sized) pin that is intended to be one of the first functioning tools to save you time from your phone. The only issue is many of the reviews you find online say it’s not quite all there yet. Read a more in-depth review here.

A simple Google search will give your answer.

The intent of the pin is to:

  • Make calls and texts

  • Attach to your body and project a display on your hands

  • Take photos and videos

  • Stream music

  • Offer select map features

3. Adobe continues to develop AI tools, this time releasing an AI Assistant.

  • One-click summaries

  • Advanced content exploration using suggested questions

  • Ask questions and receive answers with cited references

  • Create content from documents for emails, presentations, and meeting notes.

  • Come up with ideas for blog posts, articles, research topics, and more

Brush to Image Tool

Leonardo AI (Brush to Image)

Step 1: Sign up for a free account at Leonardo.

Step 2: Navigate to the realtime canvas tool.

Step 3: Use the brush tool and watch your image get generated right next to it.

A simple tool that may not offer the highest quality images compared to a Midjourney or DALL-E but it certainly remains a fun-to-use and interesting AI feature.

Prompt of the week

For Designing a Waterfront Development Addressing Sea Level Rise and Flooding

Project Overview: You are tasked with designing a resilient waterfront development that not only embraces its unique coastal setting but also addresses the critical challenges posed by sea level rise and increased flooding events. The development should cater to a mixed-use scenario, incorporating residential, commercial, and recreational spaces.

Objectives:

  1. Resilience and Sustainability: Design structures and landscapes that can withstand and adapt to varying water levels and more frequent storm events. The development should utilize sustainable materials and technologies to minimize environmental impact.

  2. Community and Accessibility: Ensure that the development enhances the quality of life for its residents and visitors. This includes safe, accessible public areas that connect people to the water and each other.

  3. Ecological Enhancement: Incorporate features that improve the ecological health of the waterfront. This might include restoring natural habitats, implementing green infrastructure, and designing with native vegetation.

  4. Innovation in Design: Utilize innovative architectural and engineering techniques that exemplify modern design while providing practical solutions to climate-related challenges.

  5. Economic Viability: The development should attract investment and become a viable economic entity. Consider how the space can be utilized year-round and adapt to future changes in climate and sea level.

Deliverables:

  • Masterplan of the entire development.

  • Detailed architectural designs of key buildings, including cross-sections and elevations.

  • Landscape design plans that detail the types of plants, pathways, and water management features.

  • Sustainability report outlining the materials, technologies, and strategies that will be used to minimize environmental impact.

  • Visual renderings and models to help stakeholders visualize the project.

Evaluation Criteria: Proposals will be evaluated based on their innovative approach to resilience, functionality, environmental sustainability, economic feasibility, and aesthetic value. Special consideration will be given to designs that provide flexible solutions that can evolve with the changing climate and community needs.
