#014: Midjourney Version 6 (Upgrades & How To Access)

Welcome to this week’s edition of Architecture Insights. A weekly newsletter on artificial intelligence for architects, landscape architects, and designers.

With yesterday’s launch of Midjourney v6, we have another opportunity to assess its capabilities for assisting with architectural projects and compare it to previous models.

This Week in AI

1. Midjourney releases Version 6.0. We will get into this in the main section.

You can also read the full overview from Midjourney.

2. OpenAI releases a full guide on prompt engineering.

This extensive guide applies to more than just designers and design managers but to everyone who uses ChatGPT. It outlines 6 different strategies to help achieve better results.

  • Include details in your prompt

  • Ask ChatGPT to adopt a persona

  • Use delimiters to indicate distinct parts of the input

  • Specify the steps you want GPT to take

  • Provide examples

  • Specify the ideal length of the output

Midjourney Version 6

Version 6 of Midjourney arrived 2 days ago. (December 20th 2023).

While it’s not the ultimate solution for generating architectural renderings, it offers higher resolution and captures textures and lighting more accurately than previous models.

Among several minor upgrades, here are some key points to note in the recent update:

Improved model knowledge: This means it has been trained on more sets of data ranging from different architectural styles to different types of trees and shrubs. This should reduce the frequency of Midjourney giving you incorrect image features because it will have a greater range of knowledge.

Improved upscaling: Simply put, if you choose to improve your image quality by upscaling, it should be of better quality than previous versions.

Expanded Customization Options: You can now fine-tune more parameters, such as the angle of lighting, material finishes, and environmental context.

User-Friendly Interface: An improved interface makes it easier for you to navigate Midjourney.

Enhanced Realism: Improved rendering of textures, materials, and lighting. This results in more lifelike images that are more suitable for presentation.

How to Use v6

Type in /settings → enter → select v6 [ALPHA] from the options. From here on all of your images will render with version 6 unless changed back.

Alternatively, just add --v6 to the end of your prompt.
