Artificial Intelligence In Solarpunk Architecture (Similarities Between Technology & Design)
Welcome back to Architecture Insights, in this weeks edition:
The United States government announced an executive order impacting the regulation standard of artificial intelligence.
What does this mean for architects?
The major developers of AI tools like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft to name a few are now required to share safety testing results before releasing their products to the public. This means architects and designers can trust that they can use software like Midjourney or DALL-E in a safe and trustworthy manor. Read here.
Apple’s entering into AI with hardware.
What does this mean for architects?
Firms or practices that use Apple products can expect to see major improvements in functionality. User will slowly see more AI tools introduced into apple products. Read here.
What is solarpunk architecture and how is AI involved?
In short, solarpunk architecture is a futuristic, communal, and ecological aesthetic.
Here is what DALL-E 3 generates with the prompt “a city that resembles solarpunk architecture”.
Solarpunk demonstrates a world separated from capitalist incentives. It drives humans to use technology in sustainable measures as tools for social and economic equality. Urban environments are designed to restore natural ecosystems threatened by climate change.
It’s difficult to evaluate a movement like solarpunk that exists almost entirely in conceptual terms. However, AI give us the ability to take these ideas and bring them closer to reality.
One can only imagine how long it would take to manual render an image like the one above in adobe creative cloud, DALL-E was able to do it in a few seconds.
An on going project that resembles this form of architecture is Oceanix, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group.
Garden by the Bay, another well-known project that resembles pieces of solarpunk architecture.
In summary the aspects of sustainability, landscape architecture, and utopianism seen in solarpunk is a driving force in any many forms of architecture.
Political and social implications
There are many impacts that solarpunk architecture and artificial intelligence have on economics and society. Solarpunk is known to disrupt capitalist frameworks by creating a more community centric, highly sustainable, low footprint designs.
On the other hand, one can argue that artificial intelligence is highly motivated by the opposite structures. It aims to save time, money, and improve efficiency on projects and tasks as its primary function.
A question every architect and designer must ask themselves when implementing AI; Does my use of AI tools lead to a diminishment of architects for their creativity and thoughtful design strategies?
There is no doubt artificial intelligence posses a threat to almost every industry. However, architectural design frameworks are no different and require us to look down the line into what the world may look like in 20, 50, and 100 years.
