Custom ChatGPT's (Creating A Personal Design Assistant)
Welcome to this week’s edition of Architecture Insights.
With the latest update to ChatGPT, architects and designers can create custom GPTs that can function as design assistants, project management tools, and more…

Create Custom ChatGPT’s
In their latest update, OpenAI allows users to create custom ChatGPT models. This sparked the idea of building our own Designer ChatGPT and testing its performance.
On the home page, you can explore the other custom GPTs, each one built with specific guidelines.
In the "Create a GPT" tab, you can prompt the AI to customize your GPT's functionality.
Let's say we aim to develop a chatbot that helps designers with research and documentation. To start with, we can use the following prompt: "I want to create a design assistant that tracks previous projects and provides inspiration for new designs based on similar developments like (x) and (y)."
You will be prompted to name your GPT and choose a logo, both of which are auto-generated.
The system will then ask you a series of questions to further customize features.
For a design assistant GPT, one of the questions we got asked was; “How should the design precedents be presented?” Answer: With pictures and links to design summaries or project info.
There are 3 more important inputs we need to look at:
Conversation starters, Knowledge, Capabilities
Conversation starters; Text typed out here will show up every time you use your custom GPT as a way to initiate conversation with the AI. You may want to have standard questions here that set up the conversation. Again for the design assistant, we may want to have: Can you find me pictures and links to previously constructed projects in North America that resemble (x) style of architecture.”
Knowledge; is where we can upload files such as PDFs with information for the GPT to administer. For example, we may want to upload a document of planning guidelines for a given city or district that needs to be considered when providing recommendations on designs.
Capabilities; For our specific design assistant GPT we may only need web browsing but if you want a DALL-E image generator built into your GPT you can have that as well.
If you are familiar with automation tools such as Zapier or Make, you can connect your chatGPT API to these platforms. By doing so, you can directly work with over 1000 applications like Teams, Zoom, and Google Office through your custom GPT. Here is a video tutorial that explains how to connect all of these tools.
